Throughout each year, experts keep an eye out for growing interest in specific trends. Now that we are in a new year, we can share the exciting interior design trends that will take hold in 2022. These trends have a theme around bright, sustainable, calm, and functional spaces. As more people transition to working from home and spending more time in their own space, interior design trends tend to reflect that. Be on the lookout for these interior design trends in 2022!

Sustainable and Efficient Design

As the global focus shifts toward a sustainable future, so will interior design trends. In 2022, be on the lookout for more environmentally friendly home trends like high-performance windows and solar panels. We’ll be seeing a lot more native species being incorporated in landscaping to create natural and water-efficient outdoor spaces.

Biophilic Design

In line with sustainable design, biophilic design will make a massive appearance in 2022. Included in Pinterest’s 2022 Top Trends Report, biophilic design brings the outdoors inside through natural colors, materials, and indoor plants. In 2020, we saw a rise in houseplants, but biophilic design takes it to the next level with plant-covered walls and full installations.

Curved Lines

Also reported in Pinterest’s 2022 Top Trends Report is curved furniture and décor. This indicates a growing interest for curved furniture pieces and other interior design elements. Curves in a space can feel much more calming and inviting than straight lines and sharp angles. As we recover from a global pandemic, people want homes that make them feel at peace rather than an edge.

Natural Kitchen Design

Another interior design trend for 2022? Casual, natural kitchens. Gone are the days of the sterile, all-white kitchen. Interior designers are instead opting for a more natural look in the kitchen. Keep an eye out for muted tones, wooden design elements, and a tasteful layering of colors and textures.

Updated Showerheads

Many homeowners are making the step to update their dated showerheads. Over half of people who replace their showerheads go with a rainfall showerhead. That being said, look out for the rise in interest in dual showerheads. They’ll be a prevalent trend in 2022.

Accessible Design

Many designers and homeowners are choosing to design bathrooms to be more accessible. As you age in your home, you still want to be able to use all of the elements from your earlier years. In 2022, we’ll see more people removing curbs from their showers and adding a bench element.

Ample Storage

Do not underestimate the power of practical storage. In 2022, a major interior design trend will be smart storage around the house. This could include kitchen cabinets that allow you to pull them out to reach the back, deep drawers meant for organizers, and even shelves that easily hide away large appliances. You may also see this trend take shape in multifunctional furniture. Fold-away desks and multi-purpose furniture will help spaces transform quickly and reduce clutter.

Heated Bathroom Floors

A big trend you’ll be seeing in 2022 is heated bathroom floors. They are growing in popularity with homebuyers and are an easy way to make a bathroom feel more luxurious. It’s relatively inexpensive to get heated floors and pretty user-friendly to install.

Homeowners and renters alike seem to be focused on enjoying their space in 2022. These trends indicate an interest in nature, comfort, and functionality above all else. We’re excited to see how these trends take shape and what new trends will emerge throughout the rest of the year.
