Fall is the perfect season for moving, especially in the Midwest. You don’t have to worry about the heat and the prices of a summer move, and you also get to avoid the bitter cold and ice of a winter move. That said, there are still a few important things to keep in mind if you plan to move homes this autumn. Below are my practical tips for moving during the fall season.
Keep an Eye on the Weather
Although fall weather tends to be mild, it is still essential to keep an eye on the weather as you approach the week of your move. Particularly, be on the lookout for your standard rainy fall day. Rain can quickly damage furniture and, depending on the length of your move, can put you at risk for mold and mildew. Your best bet is to buy a few tarps and keep your towels handy so that you are ready to dry items off as they are packed into the moving truck.
Set Aside Layers for Your Move
As you are packing, make sure to set aside multiple layers for yourself and your family members for moving day. Fall weather can vary depending on the time of day, so you’ll want to have layers so that you are covered in any climate. Things like athleisure wear, zip-up hoodies, sneakers, and sweatpants are usually a good bet for moving. Everything else can get packed away for your fall move.
Put Something Down to Save Your Carpets
With fall comes dirt, leaves, rain, and plenty of wind to blow all of this into your home. Call your moving company and see if they can provide any protectors for your carpets while they are moving you into your new home. If not, consider getting plastic tarps that you would use for painting, and put them down near your entryways or any high-traffic areas. The last thing you want to do is spend the first day in your new home treating your carpets.
Set Up Utilities Early
Since it will be a little chillier than a summer move, ensure your utilities are taken care of well in advance. See if you can get the heat turned on in your new home a day or so before you move in so that it’s ready for you when you arrive.
Keep Pathways Clear
Lastly, leave a broom aside to keep the pathways in front of your old and new house clear. Not only does this help keep everyone safe (wet leaves can be very slippery), but it also aids in ensuring leaves and dirt do not find their way into your home. If you have already packed your outdoor equipment, check in with a neighbor and see if they will let you borrow theirs. There may also be neighborhood kids who are happy to clear your pathways for you for a few bucks!
The fall is one of the best seasons to plan a move. You’re just out of peak season while still getting the advantage of good weather before winter hits. Make sure to follow these practical tips for moving during the fall season to ensure a smooth move!
